1985 190D

Viesti Kirjoittaja mygreen300d »

hey, i have the oppurtunity for a 1985 190D 2.2L. I would like to make this around a 200Hp car if possible, but i need to know how much work it is. The thing that really turns me on to this car is it is a 5speed. Can mods be done to it, or is the injection type to premative for good power? Thanks a lot, and the faster the answer the better, as this wont last very long.

Thanks,
Steve

Basically the naturally aspirated OM601 in that car misses all the good parts that are in turbocharged OM603 (300D turbo). Like oil-cooled pistons, strong conrods & bearings etc...

Of course if you could find 2,5-liter 5-cyl OM602 turbo -engine and swap that in (from 190D 2,5 turbo or from 300D 2,5 turbo).

From the stock OM601, 200hp is not impossible, but it needs more work done to the engine and still it will not be very reliable. Of course for that power you need all the stuff like fairly big turbo, IC, Mynä-prepped injection pump with 7mm plungers (elements), new exh manifold and pipe.

IMO not worth the work and expenses, unless you can swap the 4-cyl out and 5-cyl factory turboed OM602 in.
Just my $0.02

I thing Melitos is right, more easier is chance all technic, but 200hp is possible with om 601. Need lots of work to make good fourcylinder turboengine, I have lot´s of experience...

how hard is it to swap the 2.5 in there? what about the 3.0L 6 cyl? will either of these bolt to the manual transmission?

thanks for quick response

Here's a topic of 190D 3,0 superturbo:

http://mersuforum.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19899

I know you don't get much of it, but at least you can look at the pictures  The engine seems to fit quite "easy" in there and the transmission is also manual with doule disk clutch. ( i don't know the term for the part, sorry)

Exhaust is quite full of testosterone, or what do you think? :D The monster gots allmost 500 bhp, so it's quite easy to roll with other traffic....

Sorry for the bad English, it's been a while i' ve wrote anything in other languages than finnish.... And i think i should keep it that way...

Edit: BTW my nic means in english "3-spoke monsterwheel man" because of my Brabus monoblock 2 rims. 8) Everyone in this forum is ready to give their right arm to get them, but i'm not willing to sell those wheels  ( or maybe they are not  ) My title "Hupimestari" means a clown, so don't take this too seriuosly... :D

Also, i would rather have your input in not perfect english than no input at all.

Right now my question is what engine can be swapped in to a 1985 190D 2.2L that can make some good power, while still bolting to the manual transmission, and how hard is it?

Thanks,
stephen

As I said before, your best bet with engine is 5-cylinder 2,5-liter factory turbocharged OM602.961. Although they are rare and hard to find (most are naturally aspirated 602.911 and with weak parts). It should bolt up to 5-speed manual tranny.

Another good idea is to buy gasoline-powered 190E 2,3-16 with blown engine and install OM602.961 in. The getrag transmission in 16v-models is very durable and diesel-engine fits to it.

Ok, im sorry, i must not have seen your comment. are these engines better than the 3.0L 5cyl from the early 80's? Also, can these engine be made to around 300 horsepower while still being reliable? Thanks for the reply

early 5-cylinder 3.0L diesel is different than OM60x-series engines. more than 300hp OM602 is possible, but to keep it reliable, extra attention must be paid to cooling (water/oil).

sorry for the poor sentence structure. Right now my best bet would be to buy a W201 190D 5spd, swap in a 190E2.3 16V tranny and a 2.5L 5cyl turbo motor?

ok, sounds good. now, what modifications are needed to get that to push out 300-350 horsepower(more is good too  )? also, do i need an upgraded axle? thanks again
