Hallo,
I have a 1984 Hymer camper on a MB309 chassis(type 602) with a normally aspirated motor,is it possible/feasible to install a turbo motor,I have been told that converting to turbo with the original motor is not practical.I need more torque and somewhat more speed. If none of this is possible could I use a later turbopotor? and would that mean changing the gearbox as well
Thanks
Brian

A 309D is powered by an OM617, the later 310D used the OM602.
Its better to replace the whole engine with a turbo model, especially in that heavy chassis where the engine will be stressed all the time. Turbocharging the stock engine will not last reliably. Despite looking similar on the outside, inside the turbo engine is built much stronger.
Changing the gearbox is not needed. It can handle more than any diesel that can bolt to it can put out. It also has a special low 1st gear that the car transmissions do not have.
